Honoring the O'Day Short Family and inspiring a brighter future where all are welcomed, valued, and included.

Mango Principal Dr. Avila

A message from Michelle Avila

My name is Michelle Avila, and I am honored to serve as the principal of O'Day Short Elementary School. While I am new to the ODS community, I bring with me over 11 years of experience as a principal within the Fontana Unified School District.

It is both a privilege and a responsibility to uphold the proud legacy of the Short family—a legacy rooted in inclusivity and resilience so that we strive for success for all students. My foremost priority is to foster a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment where all students, staff, and families feel valued and supported.

Renaming of Randall Pepper to O'day Short Elementary

Fontana Unified School District will rename Randall Pepper Elementary School to O’Day Short Elementary School at the start of the 2025-26 school year, honoring the legacy of the Short family and reaffirming the District’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The decision, made during the Sept. 4 Board of Education meeting. This decision was made to commemorate the Short family’s courage in breaking Fontana’s racial barriers. The Short family tragically lost their lives in a racially motivated arson in 1945, and their home was located on the same land where Randall Pepper Elementary now stands. The renaming marks a significant step in recognizing their historical impact and ensuring their story is remembered.
